I keep little text snippets in my Palm's Memo database. Very handy to call up the information when you need them. I use Memoleaf which is a nice wrapper for Memo and makes sorting and retrieving the info even simpler. I shall post the Memos as follow-ups in this thread and anyone with contributions are welcome to add on... (no chit chat please, just informative notes/pointers etc)
How to use: Copy and Paste the desired Notes into your Palm Desktop as a new Memo or Outlook as a new Note. Sync and it will appear in your Palm's Memo database |

Gen/info/Crime Prevention Tips
Key this number into your handphones! Please be careful! The telephone number 03-22626555 is to Bukit Aman Hotline Wilayah Police: 03-20520199 It has been brought to our attention by the city police that there has been a 7% rise in crime rate in Klang Valley (Kuala Lumpur) over the weeks. These crimes are mainly Bag Snatching, House Break-Ins, Car Thefts and etc. By far Bag Snatching has been the one with the biggest increase and police is advising especially ladies to avoid walking about with hand bags if possible. The emergency number 099 is at times not well manned so calls can go unanswered. This happened recently when the German Ambassador tried calling 999 when his house was broken into and could not reach police in time to avoid the robbery. Police now have a control centre telephone number and everyone should be able to call in case of emergency. The number is 03 2262 6555. Please keep this number handy and educate your family members on this. Bag Snatching. Never carry a handbag, but instead try a backpack style worn correctly or a 'bum bag'. Do not carry anything in your bag you cannot afford to lose. Be particularly mindful of your bag when you are on your hand phone, loading the car, getting in and out of a taxi in a crowded area or if motorbikes are coming past you. To help prevent snatch thieves taking your phone, switch it to vibrate, keep it in your pocket and use a hands free set while walking? If they can't see or hear it, its less likely to attract attention. Walk away from the kerb edge, not along the side of the road. Mugging. Be suspicious if you get a puncture after leaving a bank or ATM. It is possible that someone saw you withdraw the cash and placed the nail in your tyre so they could grab it as they offer to help you change your wheel. Be suspicious of people offering to help you into your car with shopping etc. It's easy for them to snatch a bag when you are occupied with kids or bags. Sexual assaults/Improper advances. With an assault, scream, shout, fight, run? Do whatever is.necessary to attract attention to yourself and get out of the area fast. It goes without saying that most attacks of this type tend to happen in isolated, dark or empty places ? Avoid such places if alone and make sure that you have your hand phone available? If you are unhappy, start making calls, describing the man/ the taxi driver, registration number, location, anything that will put the attacker off before hand. With improper advances; most offences of this type tend to happen in public, and in crowded places; particularly on buses and in trains. The best way to deal with this is SHOUT, directly at the offender or in his general direction and tell him, in no uncertain terms that you do NOT want him to touch you. Don't get off at the next station, unless its your stop and there's people with you. If its in the workplace? Report it immediately. |

Gen/info/Your Rights vs Cop
What are Your Rights When Stopped by a Cop?
In the latest issue of its magazine, the Automobile Association of Malaysia (AAM) gives motorists useful advice on what their rights are during occasions when they are dealing with the police as well as what they are legally obliged to do when ordered to stop.
According to the AAM, if you are stopped by a uniformed police officer while you are driving, you are to stop your car quickly and pull over in a safe manner. You should voluntarily wind down your window glass and if it is at night, switch on the cabin light.
The article also suggests that you do not make sudden or suspicious movements in the car - such as digging into your glovebox or under the seat for something - and to avoid being rude to the policeman. You also do not have to step out of the car unless instructed to.
If asked to produce your documents, you have the right to ask the policeman to show his ID first. You should also ask if you are receiving a summons and for what offence. If you are satisfied with the ID shown by the policeman, you should produce your Identity Card (or passport if you are a foreigner) and driver's licence. If you are told that you have committed an offence, accept the summons without argument and then depart.
In the event that the policemen ask you to follow them to a police station, you can ask them if you are under arrest and for what offence. The AAM article notes that if you are not under arrest, you have the right to leave instead of following them.
For those who are concerned about being stopped by people claiming to be policemen, the AAM advises that plainclothes police officers (ie those not in police uniform) do not possess the authority to stop a vehicle and you can therefore refuse to stop. This is important advice in view of reported cases of motorists being stopped and robbed by persons pretending to be police officers.
However, you should drive to the nearest police station and lodge a report of such an occurrence. It would obviously be useful if you can provide good details of the people and the location where they attempted to stop you.
Generally, motorists will be nervous when stopped by a policeman but if you understand your own rights, there is nothing to worry about. If you know you have committed an offence, it is best to accept the summons instead of arguing. The policeman is obliged to give you a summons and beyond that, it is up to you to argue your innocence in court or if permitted, the offence can be compounded and a fine paid without having to be referred to a court.
