At 2 pm today,I was at Kajang Prison to visit an old comrade in arms, Dr.Basmullah Yusuf who has been sentenced to 3 months prison for unable to pay the RM120,000 fine imposed onto him for failing to register his clinic under the new Private Health Act.Dr.Basmullah is a caring dr who charges minimum fees for his services especially when serving his poor pts. With the paltry fees that he gets and having to fend 8 children of his own the good man now has to pay a hefty price.Words cannot describe my feelings when I saw him dressed in his prison clothes trying to put on a brave front for the sake of his tearful wife and children.A good kind hearted dr is now being treated like a common criminal. After seeing the case first hand and on the advice of a lawyer in order to get him out he has to pay the absurd fine and appeal later. The doctors who were there together with me were Drs Khalid,Wan Julia,Ikram,Suib,Jaafar and Rozita has pledged some funds to get the ball rolling. For those who are caring enough to donate kindly contact Dr.Khalid 012-3772110, Dr.Zaimah 012-3966517,Dr.Wan Julia 0162339367

It is ridiculous to see the innocent goes to jail, simply because he cannot afford to pay for whatever reasons. He should tell MOH that he was the doctor who appeared to run the clinic, yet it was not him, but looked liked him; and he could do whatever he wished in his own clinic!
To keep the balls rolling, who's ball?, I shall donate Rm 100 to him. I shall contact Dr Khalid to forward cheque to him.
Regards to him and family.

"Ball rolling" is a figure of speech.Anyway thanks for your kind gesture. We could certainly do with more caring doctors like you.I have received a call from David who has donated RM500.00 although he does not know Dr Basmullah personally.God Bless you and your family.Save a few concerned Doctors, the response has been rather lukewarm.Looks Like the term "caring doctors"does not apply when it comes to helping one of their own.We have received numerous "Intelligent" Opinions from Doctors suggesting everything from seing certain political leaders to seing the King. There has also been weird political conpiracy theories bandied around. As a doctor,I prefer to remain apolitical. While we appreciate all the "intelligent" advice,at this jucture, donations of the monetary kind would be more welcomed. We would also like to appeal to those doctors adopting a 'hollier then thou'attitude to keep their two cents worth of opinion to themselves.Let us not forget, while we embark on this exercise showing off our "supreme" mental capacity,Basmullah is languishing in a dark cell in prison. Its pains me to see the apathy facing us doctors in not wanting a lend a helping hand to a friend in need.My husband has suggested I seek assistance from Persatuan Bomoh Malaysia.Maybe they would be more responsive.

ub88,
"Ball rolling" is indeed a figure of speech. Sorry, I was just a little playful with words. That was Lingam's effect .....
I have been a volunteer doctor for prisoners, and thou, I have not been allowed in their "residence", I have seen lots of scabbies, pyoderma etc from these prisoners.
I have deposited Rm100 into Dr. Khalid's RHB account. It's a very small contribution.
I do not know Dr. Basmullah personally at all. Perhaps some think he is a Bumi doctor, how can such things happen to him. The fact speaks for itself.
How could a doctor who sees 30 - 40 patients a day face such finaicial dilemma? ( I see less than that). Sometimes, he did not charge house-calls, esp for the neighbourhood; sometimes, he charged less; sometimes, he left his clinic to go for Mercy trip to Acheh etc. Plus 8 children and spouses to feed. I beg his pardon, if my information is wrong, and has offended him.
But all these are beside the point. We doctors have signed a "blank cheque" to MOH , and is now facing the most ludicrous situation -
the imprisonment of a colleague who just can"t afford to pay the registration!

Dr. Basmullah's case has been noted by the MMA as evident by the letter written by its President, Datuk Dr. Khoo KL on this matter. Perhaps, it would not be inappropriate if ub88 approaches the MMA as it is obvious the organisation, cannot but be concerned over this event.

I agree with ngchmd.
Since Dr Basmullah is not a member of MMA, it would be better if ub88 approaches the MMA and seek MMA's help officially.
Since it has been reported in some forums that Dr Basmullah had volunteered before for Mercy Malaysia, perhaps their help can also be sought. Mercy does have some media prominence, and can help garner publicity.
If the PPIM can seek MMA's cooperation on the matter, it would be better. (I believe that Dr Basmullah is a member of PPIM, although I may be wrong.)

Read this letter from Dr Kamaruddin Ahmad, whom I believe is the Chairman of MMA Johor.

Assalamualaikum wbth

Saya rasa PPIM patut mengambil initiatif membantu Dr
Basmullah.
Saya pertama membawa perkara ini Persatuan Perubatan
Malaysia, walaupon Dr Basmullah bukan ahli MMA.
Saterusnya MMA telah bertindak segera dengan
meneluarkan press statement. Saya di Johor jua
mengigatkan doktor disini supaya mengambil berat
terhadap perkara ini.
Sabtu lepas MMA Council juga telah membuat kepurtusan
akan melawat Dr Basmullah do penjara dan mahu
menwarkan bantuan.....
Kalau MMA boleh dan mahu memberikan bantuan, saya rasa
PPIM SEPATUTNTYA mengambil berat terhadap kes ini.
Saya harap PPIM semua kita patut 'mendesak'/merayu
kerajaan supaya menimbang hukuman ini.
PATUTKAH KITA BERDIAM DIRI..????

Thanks doctors. Its nice to know ther are other out there who cares. After visiting Basmullah in Prison,we rushed to PWTC where MMA were having their "Special" General Meeting. We spoke to the president and a few other members. We were told that MMA Is most concerned about Basmullah plight and would be meeting Basmullah the following day in prison.Until now ,we have not received any feedback.Perhaps someone out there can keep us posted on the progress.I pray whatever concerns for Basmullah will not remain merely concerns until his 3 months is up.As for Dr Kamarudin's suggestion that the appropriate association play an active role, I fully support. After all, Basmullah with his beard and Turban can only be a Sikh or a Muslim.Whichever association that feels he is a member, please kindly act.Thanks.

Well it's not the MMA but the DAP who is helping Dr. Basmullah get out of prison.

Now the donation is directed to Bluemosque Charity Network (a/c no.CIMB 12280005152059)..this is under the muslim consumer assosiation helmed by Dato Dr.Maamor as to reject certain quarters claims'that we are actually breaking the law to collect donation fr the concerned public and drs as we do not have any permit to collect donation...darn!!...to do charity work to help our fellow dr also becomes a scrutiny...guess its easier to do NATO then (no action talk only)...Anyway we managed to collect around RM22,000 (not bad huh)and presented the cheque to dr maamor for further action to avoid any untoward incident...Deep from the bottom of my heart I'd like to express my utmost gratitude to those concerned contributers...May God bless you and your family and bestow you with more glad tidings..
