quote: Things have improved, but still these scenarios still happen sometimes, I was told. Any other interesting experiences or stoires?
These are interesting stories of the past. However, we have "progressed" and such practices should rarely occur now.
20 years ago, I brought up a problem case for discussion with Dr. Pounder (a famous gastroenterologist from London) regarding a patient with intermittent jaundice in the medical ward who remained undiagnosed. My question was how to determine the cause of the jaundice in this patient who was in a hospital with no ultrasound facilities.
He did not solve my problem, but his answer was "tepat": "No hospital should be without an ultrasound."

| Yup, for the scenario of post partum haemorrhage, the question in court will be why was the delivery carried out in a hospital that has no facility to deal with any potential complication. |

Guess you can try searching in the Academy of Medicine register of 1,778 specialists. However not all specialists would be members of the Academy.

| So if there are about 20,000 doctors than I guess a ballpark figure would be about 10%? |

| I'm not sure if this fits in here but I have a question. Is it possible for a family practitioner to work in a hospital in M'sia? Which department will he be working under? Any qualifications needed? |

What is the actual areas of work of general surgeons in these days of subspecialisation? Thyroids are taken by ENT/ Head and Neck Surgeons, and there are colorectal surgeons and also gastroenterologists doing lot of procedures, hepato-biliary surgeons, urologists/renal surgeons, skin/plastic surgeons, vascular surgeons etc?! In private, is it better to label yourself a general surgeon with special interest in some areas or a subspecialist?
What about physicians--is it better to label oneslf as general physician and subspecialisation such as nephrologist or cardiologist etc or just plain subspecialist? |

| One specialist colleague commented that modern day specialists must be have one 'must have' 'qualification'--- computer savvy, able to use multimedia applications in all fields, including daily work, communication, education-self and to teach and using it to conduct research etc. Please comment. |

| I was asked this question: Who are the specialists in sexual health--physicians, O&G consultants, urologists or those with diplomas in sexual health/the royal colleges? This is a hot topic among the education planners and the media especially in the midst of debate of sex education in schools. Please comment. |

Plenty, depending on your interest. Occupational health -- distance learning from Edith Cowan University (ECU), part time from Uni Putra Mal (UPM). There are others.
Fam Med.. M. Med distance learning from ECU, Monash uni. FRACGP conjoint exam with academy of fam. med malaysia. Palliative Care- distance learning from ECU
Dip. in Primary Care dermatology. Uni of Wales.
Dip. in Reproductive med. -- UPM
Others may like to contribute.
Insurance for GPs -- Take advantage of your MMA membership for their insurance services. This may include personal accident ins, special clinic insurance (make sure it includes public liablilty just in case someone falls in your clinic and decide to sue). Also cover yourself for robbery, cash in transit etc. Obviously professional imdemity is a must, preferably MPS or medical defence malaysia. Needless to say, hosp + surgical ins. knowing the cost of med rx nowadays. Get a term life insurance to protect your dependents.
Have a good day. |

Good suggestions, but all those paper chase cost money.Ask yourself whether you wish to compete with your chldren on limited educational fund, or if yo have the money, spend more time with the family (mind you, your children are more yours when they are young; as they aged, you have to share them with others etc) In a cyber age, there are so many ways to keep one occupy for free, for instance, interact in MMR! attend free CME, voluntary works of sorts, new hobbies etc.
Basically, it all depends on whether you wish to educate your professional aspect further or the social etc aspect. For instance, learn about parenting skill and education, family dynamics, wine appreciation, poetry, gossiping, finding MOL etc etc.
